University of Maryland Asian American Studies Professor Janelle Wong says a large group of Asian Americans that migrated during the 1980s and ’90s are gaining more political power during this election season.
Wong says the polarized political environment makes Asian Americans a rare group both parties can attract.
“There is also the fact, but also stereotype, that Asian Americans are mostly foreign-born,” she continues.
“But, one thing I want to bring up is, again, I think people dismiss Asian American candidates like Andrew Yang.
Yang has been criticized for reinforcing Asian American stereotypes, like when he said because he’s Asian, ‘he knows a lot of doctors.’
