As the chief inspector of schools pointed out, children who lack motivation will be among the biggest losers of lockdown.

A recent study found that more than two million children have done virtually no schoolwork during the lockdown.

Aside from the impact of children’s academic progress, there is also the social and emotional cost of closing schools.

Where older people should be receiving care, instead we are seeing well-intentioned, but ultimately un-trained and time-poor family members being left to pick up care duties.

What lockdown has made apparent is that successive governments have not prioritised social care.
