This moment wasn’t the first or last time I realized that South Asians had a shared experience with Black Americans.
Like our Black neighbors, it’s not unusual for Asian Americans to experience racism and attacks by white supremacists.
Now, after the recent police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, many Asian Americans are grappling with how to most effectively stand in solidarity with Black Americans.
We also have Black Americans to thank for their work in supporting movements for South Asian liberation abroad, like the movement for Indian independence.
Asian Americans need to be talking about all the ways anti-Blackness has infiltrated every institution and community in the country, including ours.
