The Oglala Sioux Tribe has voted to legalize medical and recreational marijuana on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Preliminary results from the tribe’s election commission show that 82% voted in favour of medical marijuana legalization, and 72% approved recreational marijuana.
Marijuana remains fully illegal in South Dakota, but the Oglala Sioux say that their sovereignty gives them the right to produce and sell cannabis on the reservation.
Marijuana is fully illegal in all three states, so the Oglala Sioux hope to welcome plenty of cannabis consumers.
South Dakotans will vote on whether to legalize both recreational and medical cannabis in the November ballot.
