A half-dozen Democratic lawmakers are making plans to travel to battleground states with growing Asian-American and Pacific Islander populations in hopes of boosting the turnout of the Democratic-leaning bloc in the November elections.
The Asian-American population grew 72% between 2000 and 2015, making it the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in the country, according to Pew Research.
While 65% of Asian Americans backed the Democratic nominee in 2016, Democratic lawmakers say there is room for improvement ahead of the 2020 election.
“But then after 2016, you know, we’re all constantly doing autopsies on what happened and trying to do better,” she said.
In the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community, she said, “there was a lot more we needed to do.”
