That’s what happens regularly to Jerry Busone of Green Island, one of the pioneers of women’s basketball in the 1970s and early ‘80s.
He started a run of highly successful girls’ basketball teams at the Troy school.
At Old Dominion, the women’s team filled the gym and were as popular as the men’s team, Busone said.
The Lady Monarchs back-to-back AIAW national basketball championships in 1979 and 1980 included a dominant 72-2 record over a two-year stretch.
University of North Carolina at Wilmington Women’s Basketball Head Coach Karen Barefoot, who also coached at Old Dominion after Busone left, recently asked Busone to speak to her team.
