Ah, the rise and rise of the social media influencer, those over art-directed and brand-conscious denizens of materialism and mediocrity who rule social media and command gazillions of followers supposedly obsessed with their most banal life moments.

Recently I received a press release “alerting” me to a supposedly major social event in Sydney I should be covering, offering accreditation to stand on a red carpet with a photographer to capture such a historic occasion.

Naturally I opened the email keen to find out more, but when it came to the roll call of “big names”, rather than the likes of Blanchett, Packer, Murdoch or Kidman I was expecting, instead I found myself madly Googling.
