The stereotypes explored in “Crazy Rich Asians” are part of what’s referred to as the model minority myth, something studied by Cal State Fullerton professor of philosophy Emily S. Lee.
Such statements puzzle those who consider the model minority myth a positive stereotype, she says in her paper, which will be published as part of a book by Northwestern University Press.
“In other words, the model minority myth can serve as a source of anxiety for Asian Americans.
“Under such circumstances, if one fails as a model minority, it especially demonstrates one’s ineptness”She wonders whether the model minority stereotype exacerbated the number of suicides of Korean Americans during the Great Recession, for example.
“I wonder if the existence of the model minority stereotype contributes to the need for Asian Americans to desire wealth over other values in the 21st century,” Lee writes.
