Hate speech against Asian-Americans has been reported to be on the rise, since the coronavirus started to spread in the United States.
The FBI has warned of a possible spike in hate crimes against Asian-American, and advocacy groups are concerned that the president has been calling COVID-19 the “Chinese virus.”
A group of Pennsylvania legislators have introduced a package of bills they call “PA Against Hate.”
The legislators introducing the bills were on the call: Rep. Dan Frankel (D-23, Pittsburgh); Sen. Jay Costa (D-43, Pittsburgh); Rep. Ed Gainey (D-24, Pittsburgh); and Sen. Larry Farnese (D-1, Philadelphia).
“It’s not about promoting hate, it’s about promoting unity and cooperation,” Gainey said, “and demonstrating another level of love.”
