According to the White House Online Privacy Policy, the administration “automatically archives ‘tweets’ from official White House accounts, ‘direct messages’ sent to or from official White House accounts, and ‘mentions’ (tweets from other users to official White House accounts; these tweets contain an @ and the username of an official White House account (e.g., @WhiteHouse).

— President Obama (@POTUS) May 18, 2015His @BarackObama account on Twitter, run by the staff of his Organizing for Action group, and the official @WhiteHouse accounts have also previously received racist posts.

The White House previously said such messages are often directed at the White House Twitter feed and those of other administration officials.

The White House points out that the response to @POTUS, which had more than 2 million followers on Friday morning, has been largely positive.
