As an Asian American woman, author Celeste Ng says she’s always been painfully cognizant of how strangers may read her.

While Bebe may not be the entire focus of the show, she doesn’t have to be to make a statement.

But Ng said that to develop a character many would consider subversive, she stuck to an authentic portrayal of a piece of Asian America.

“It’s a different piece of art and it’s a different medium,” she explained.
