Asian Americans had been perniciously stereotyped as the “model minority” but are now plagued with a different stereotype.
Over a four-week duration from its official launch on March 19 the STOP AAPI HATE national reporting center received 1,500 reports of coronavirus-related discrimination, verbal harassment and physical assaults towards Asian Americans.
Yet reports have come from 45 states and Washington, D.C., exposing the rampant and underlying bigotry that individuals expressed towards Asian Americans, seemingly to “blame” them for our pandemic.
We can interrupt discrimination by taking an active role by speaking out against oppressors.
It is only these individual and collective acts of advocacy that will uproot the deep-seated racism that is now unduly harming Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
