Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, is one of the most effective and successful forms of couple’s therapy in the world.
“African-American couples don’t trust white therapists and there is a good reason why,” says Stavrianopoulos.
“White therapists tend to blame African-Americans for not going to therapy.
They have all this distress in their relationship, but they don’t seek therapy.’ Well, African-Americans don’t seek therapy because we white therapists are not very understanding of their experiences.
“It really is up to white therapists to see their whiteness, acknowledge their privilege and biases, and educate themselves,” Stavrianopoulos says.
