The two most dominant stereotypes were that Asian parents are harsh and Asian kids work super hard.
Why are Asian parents harsh?
I’ve not seen anyone tackle these questions until I saw “Tigertail,” Alan Yang’s masterful directorial debut, out now on Netflix.
Like me, Yang’s parents grew up in Taiwan and then moved to the States.
I’ve heard the story of “Tigertail” told from Asian fathers and mothers in simplified, mythologized and emotionally sanitized manner, but never with the kind of stark detail Yang’s movie offers.
